Automatic Annotation and Information Retrieval : New Perspectives

Special Track at
the 20th International Florida Artificial Intelligence Research Society Conference 2007

In cooperation with the American Association for Artificial Intelligence

Casa Marina Resort and Beach Club

May 7-9, 2007

Call for Papers

Textual information extraction, and particularly the extraction of information from  Web-based  text, requires the annotation of a great number of documents very quickly, using standard categories : syntactical, grammatical (identifying tenses and aspects), lexical (the identification of « transfer » verbs, « donation » verbs, « localisation » verbs …) and communicative categories (identifying relations of definition, of causality, identifying quotations, comments, images). Present annotation procedures are either automatic and not based on standard categories, or conversely, based on standard categories but not automatic. We need automatic procedures accompanied by appropriate linguistic resources making use of these annotation categories. Using these annotations of text elements - verbs, sentences, phrases, propositions, paragraphs, titles, definitions, causality, and so on - , should simplify the process of extracting target information from text.

Annotation is closely related to segmentation. Relations between each other have to be more investigated.

The logical structures and logical organizations which are on the basis of annotation have to be studied as well.

The aim of this track is intended to provide an international forum for discussing the latest approaches in annotation, its relations to NLP and to AI.

Also, this special track is intended to gather a wide range of papers related to annotation. We suggest topics in :

  1. Automatic strategies and procedures for annotation.
  2. Categorial structures, syntactical structures, grammatical structures, structures of speech as background for linguistic resources needed in annotation systems.
  3. Annotation and segmentation systems.
  4. Annotation and reasoning.
  5. Theoretical basis on automatic annotation in Semantic Web.
  6. Building ontologies using a structured knowledge obtained from text corpora.
  7. All other sub-field related to annotation.

Any paper related to these areas is welcome.

Submission Instructions

Interested authors must submit an electronic PDF copy of their complete manuscript of no more than 6 pages by November 20, 2006. All submissions must be original work and not submitted concurrently to a journal or another conference.

Authors should format their papers according to AAAI formatting guidelines. Papers must be submitted in PDF format through the online submission system. Authors of accepted papers will be required to sign a form transferring copyright of their contribution to AAAI. An author of each accepted paper is required to register and attend FLAIRS, and present the paper.

Questions regarding paper submissions should be addressed to the papers co-chairs :
